Nguyen Trung Viet obtained his PhD from Tohoku University, Japan in 2007. He is currently a Professor at Thuyloi University, Vietnam. He has strong expertise in nearshore hydro-morphodynamics using both field measurements and numerical modeling, remote sensing video techniques. He was a project leader of numerous MOST projects on Nha Trang Coast (2013-2019) and Cua Dai Beach (2015-2018) in very close collaborations with IRD/EPOC/AFD-France, Japan and UK. He published more than 100 papers in journals and international conferences. He has been promoted to Vice President of Thuyloi University since 2014. He is appointed as a distinguished member of IAHR-APD and the executive member of Asian and Pacific Coasts (APAC) council and a member of the State Council for Professorship, Vietnam in the field of hydraulic engineering since 2019.

3. Study on management solutions of medium and small reservoirs in the Central and the Highland of Vietnam for controlling flood in dry seasons. A ministrial project, completed in 2005 (member).

4. Field Investigation and Numerical Simulation of Salinity Intrusion into the Hau River Estuary, Vietnam. Period: September 2003 to March 2007. This project is performed within the framework of the project “Synbiosis of Human, Nature and Earth” under Research Revolution 2002 (RR2002) financed by Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, Sports, and Technology (MEXT). (PI).

5. Influence of Morphology Change on Salinity Concentration in an Estuary. This project was supported by Foundation of River and Watershed Environment Management, Japan (Principal investigator: Professor Hitoshi Tanaka). Period: June 2005-May 2006 (member).

      12. Study on the erosion process and the measures to sustainably protect of the Hoi-An beaches from erosion. This is projected funded by French Agency for Development (AFD), France and Quang Nam People’s Committee. Research period: 2016-2017 (Deputy investigator and leader of consulting unit, ~500k EUR).

      13.  Investigate morphodynamical processes and propose applied solutions to recreate and upgrade the Nha Trang coast, Khanh Hoa province in the context of climate change. This is a protocol project with IRD, France. Research period: Nov. 2016-May. 2019 (PI, ~300k USD).

      14. Exploring the potential applications of machine learning for the erosion/accretion process of Vietnam beaches. Funded by Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF). Research period: 2019- 2020 (Co-PI, ~35k £).

B. NHA TRANG BEACH EROSION PROJECTS

The 1st phase: "Study  on hydrodynamic  regime  and  sediment  transport  in  estuarine  and coastal zones of Nha Trang bay, KhanhHoa province” (2013-2014, PI)

The 2nd phase: "Investigate morphodynamical processes and propose applied solutions to recreate and upgrade the Nha Trang coast, KhanhHoa province in the context of climate change" (2016-2019, PI).

Short Description of the project:

Beach of Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa, Vietnam is regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with blue sea, white sand and sunshine. However, after the artificial facilities were built along the beach such as the embankments for the expansion of Tran Phu Street, the beach underwent a complex transformation. Especially the deterioration of the beach has been a particularly serious problem for the development of the region. The main objectives of this project are:

(1) To determine the hydrodynamic and morphodynamics of Nha Trang bay and understand the difference of behaviour with South Nha Trang, this to see whether if this bay is in equilibrium and can be stable in a perspective of nourishment;

(2) To propose science-technology solutions to re-create degraded beach in the North bay and to upgrade beach in the South bay in order to meet ecological tourism development in Nha Trang bay;

(3) To propose technical solutions to monitoring and warning ecological environmental conditions in Nha Trang bay in the context of climate change and sea level rise.

C. CUA DAI BEACH EROSION PROJECT : “Study on beach erosion mechanism of estuarine and coastal zones of Cua Dai and proposed countermeasures”

Short Description of the project:

Hoi An, located in central Viet Nam, around 25 kilometres south of Danang, is one of the most beautiful cities of Vietnam. The old town of Hoi An is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Since 2004, this well-known tourist site is under the threat of severe erosion processes that could destroy all its beaches. Over past 10 years, the coastline has been retreated even until 200m.

Several construction sites at tourist resorts have been swallowed by waves, bringing work to a complete standstill. The erosion process increasingly becomes threatening.

This project aims to understand the mechanism responsible for the erosion process in the HAB coastal zone, and then to define the soft and hard measures for sustainably protecting the HAB from erosion.
